Hallo :-)
I’m Steven van Holland — a Dutch language teacher and writer who only recently discovered how much fun writing can be… and now I can’t seem to stop.
I write in both English and Dutch, usually with a mix of humor, curiosity, and cultural chaos. My first book, Lekker Direct: Surviving the Netherlands One Awkward Moment at a Time, is a light-hearted but honest look at Dutch life, written especially for expats, internationals, and anyone curious about how things really work here.
I also write the Kaas Vos & Coelha series — whimsical stories in Dutch, available in two versions: a standard edition and a special NT2 edition designed for language learners.
You’ll often find me working from cafés in Utrecht, pastelarias in Porto, or sunny corners in Athens — basically anywhere with strong coffee and a power socket. My stories mix culture, language, and a bit of mischief, always with the goal of helping readers laugh, learn, and feel a little more at home.
My Books
Right now, you can not order directly, You can find all my books on my Amazon Author Page. But more are on the way! — including newKaas Vos & Coelha stories — coming in Q4 of 2025. Below some information on my currently published books.
Lekker Direct: Surviving the Netherlands One Awkward Moment at a Time is my first published book, and it’s written in English.
I started writing it after spending years traveling and noticing just how strange — and entertaining — Dutch habits can seem when seen from the outside. But honestly, a big part of the inspiration came from all the expats living in the Netherlands, who kept holding up a mirror and asking, “Wait... you guys do what now?” Turns out, a lot of what I thought was normal is actually pretty weird.
So what happens when blunt meets gezelligheid?
A mix of awkward moments, cultural confusion, and (hopefully) lots of laughs.
Lekker Direct follows expats among which Dimitrios and Eleni, a Greek couple living in the Netherlands, as they — along with their international friends — navigate everything from kringverjaardags and Kingsday chaos to the existential crisis of being told to bring your own birthday cake to work.
You’ll also meet:
An Italian couple who dare to show up late to a party
An American slowly unraveling over Dutch Sinterklaas traditions
A Portuguese woman stalked by curtainless windows
And many more characters just trying to survive daily life in Dutchland
Inside, you'll discover:
What to do when your gift completely misses the mark
How to find your way into a secret Dutch mustard society
Why toddlers dominate the supermarket race
And what it really means when a monkey crawls out of your sleeve
Is it based on true stories? Absolutely. Mostly. Kind of.
Lekker Direct is short, sharp, and unapologetically honest — part guidebook, part comedy, and part therapy session for anyone who’s ever felt baffled by Dutch culture (and yes, even the Dutch themselves).
Lekker Direct is available as both a paperback and eBook on Amazon:

🗣️ NT2 Kaas Vos & Coelha Leren je Nederlands
:earn Dutch Through Storytelling
As a Dutch teacher, I kept hearing the same question: “What can I read to improve my Dutch that’s not boring or too childish?”
And honestly, I didn’t have a great answer. Most Dutch learners get pointed toward children's books (which are nice, but often miss the cultural or adult context expats need), or they’re stuck with dry, artificial NT2 short stories that offer little narrative joy.
So I decided to create my own solution.
NT2 Kaas Vos & Coelha is a story-based Dutch reader series specially designed for language learners. Each chapter is presented twice:
First in A1-level Dutch (for beginners)
Then again in a richer A2–B1 version (for intermediate learners)
This dual-format helps you build confidence at a lower level, and then re-read the same story with more depth and vocabulary — all without losing the joy of storytelling. It’s a great tool whether you’re just starting out or trying to level up.
You’ll also find:
Visual vocabulary pages (word-picture association)
Glossaries for each chapter with English translations
Thematic repetition to support long-term retention (food, emotions, daily life, etc.)
Even though it’s an NT2 reader, the stories are fun to read with your kids too — and there’s a long-term story arc that develops across the first five books, with real character growth.
Who is it for?
The series (and therefor the books) have their own place on Amazon 👉 You can buy them here. They might in the future also become availabe at your local library
— NT2 Kaas Vos & Coelha is made for you.
The NT2 version is available in both paperback and eBook, just like the original. I aim to release a new book every month for the first year, so feedback and ideas are always welcome!
The Original Kaas Vos & Coelha Series
Kaas Vos & Coelha is a lighthearted, fully illustrated story series about a cheese-obsessed fox and a curious rabbit living in a gezellig Dutch village. The stories revolve around friendship, food, misunderstandings, moving house — and, of course, carrots and cheese.
I didn’t originally write this series for Dutch children — but they enjoy it all the same. The language is rich, natural Dutch, and the stories are fun to read aloud, with plenty of visual and verbal humor. There are running jokes, warm themes, and little details between the lines that grow as the series goes on.
And while the tone is always family-friendly, some lines tend to land a little differently depending on who's reading. One that readers often quote back to me is:
“Voor het toetje gingen ze samen naar het huis van Coelha.”
Completely innocent in the story — but adults sometimes pause and smile. That’s part of the fun: layered storytelling that gives something to everyone, whether you're six or sixty.
This version of the series is best for:
Dutch-speaking or multilingual families
Curious adult readers who enjoy cozy, character-driven stories
Anyone who loves a bit of mischief, heart, and cheese
This edition does not include a glossary or simplified language. It’s written in flowing, native Dutch. If you’re learning Dutch and looking for extra support, the NT2 version was made especially for you.

Cheese, carrots… and a very suspicious envelope.
In the second adventure of Kaas Vos & Coelha, our favorite duo is back — and things are getting stranger, spicier, and slightly more dramatic.
It all begins with a rainy morning, a mysterious letter, and a forgotten painting. As Coelha uncovers unsettling memories (and Kaas Vos tries to stay dry and emotionally stable), the village prepares for market day. But between burnt soup, suspicious vossinnen, and flute-shaped clues, nothing quite goes according to plan.
🧀 Expect:
Secret pasts and stolen art
Kitchen chaos (featuring questionable linzenmasala)
A very opinionated squirrel named Juna
The glamorous and mysterious Fina Vlamstaart
And of course… one very gemeen konijn
In this chapter, the Kaas Vos & Coelha universe expands with new characters, deeper emotions, and the first hints of a bigger storyline — all wrapped in cheese, sarcasm, and carrot-shaped secrets.
Whether you’re reading the native Dutch version or the NT2 learner edition, Book 2 brings:
More wit, more warmth, and a bit more backstory
Emotional undercurrents (that even kids might notice)
An ongoing mystery that builds toward future volumes
